Why instructional design is important in eLearning

Instructional Design (ID) is one of the most vital aspects of eLearning, and without it, eLearning would be just text on a screen.

It is the systematic practice of designing and developing instructional experiences, similar to those of instructors.

ID is meant to aid in delivering a better learning experience for learners.

In today's fast-paced world, the demand for effective learning experiences has never been greater. This is where instructional design comes in.

Instructional designers are currently becoming more popular than ever, and here are my reasons why:

  • Remote work is increasingly becoming more important and necessary across the globe among organizations.
  • Instructional designers play a crucial role in creating eLearning experiences that learners love.
  • Instructional Designers produce focused/customized training.
  • Instructional design uses strategies to encourage the participation of learners and optimize learning experiences.
  • Instructional design is results-driven - setting clear deliverables and accountabilities by identifying concrete and measurable objectives.
  • Instructional designers create a stronger link between the learning program and the actual performance.
  • Instructional design can adapt to a learner's particular needs by offering to customize instructions, yet remain consistent simultaneously.
  • Instructional design is cost-effective. Simplifying the learning process, objectives are met more easily, and resources are maximized.

Instructional design is crucial because it ensures that learning is not just a passive activity, but an active one that engages learners and enhances their understanding of the subject matter. Through instructional design, learners can acquire knowledge and skills in a way that is tailored to their needs and learning style, making the learning experience more effective and efficient.

Instructional design also plays a vital role in ensuring that organizations remain competitive and adaptable. By ensuring that their employees are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their jobs effectively, organizations can improve their productivity, reduce turnover, and increase their bottom line.

Moreover, instructional design is important because it is a constantly evolving field. Advances in technology, changes in the workforce, and emerging trends all have an impact on instructional design, making it essential for instructional designers to stay up-to-date and adaptable. This requires a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development, as well as a willingness to experiment with new approaches and techniques to create effective learning experiences.
